History of Matsubayashi Ryu Matsubayashi Ryu, a form of Okinawan Karate, was developed by Shoshin Nagamine. Nagamine developed his style based on the teachings of three primary instructors: Ankichi Arakaki, Chotoku Kyan, and Choki Motobu. In addition to these primary teachers Nagamine was instructed in old style karate by Iha Kodatsu, Kuba Chojin, and Shimabuku Taro. Through these teachers Nagamine learned the three tanrenho naihanchi kata; in addition to the 8 classical kata of Matsubayashi Ryu. It is these kata which provides a link to the karate greats after which Matsubayashi is named: Kosaku Matsumora and Sokon Matsumura. Nagamine's style is a striking art designed to allow the user to strike with the entire body rather than just the limbs. Due to the unique method of power generation such okinawan karate has been referred to as full body boxing. In addition to striking as its primary weapon, its strikes are supplemented with distancing and grappling skills. When combined with body hardening, physical conditioning, and spirit training, Matsubayashi Ryu karate is truly a complete art and system of fighting.
